Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers less than 500 lbs sold fully steady, 500 to 800 lbs sold 7.00 to 9.00 higher, over 800 lbs sold steady. Heifers less than 800 lbs sold 2.00 to 5.00 higher over 800 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher on thin test of the market. Demand was moderate to good for calves, feeders and bred heifers and cows. Feedlot traded sold live sales 1.00 to 1.50 lower from 185.00 to 185.50 and dressed sales sold 4.00 lower at 290.00. Very nice weekend weather for the opening of deer season. Most of the fall crops were out helping hunters see the deer coming across fields. Tick change in the weather coming next week with chances of moisture either in rain or maybe snow depending on air temperature.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
