Compared to last week, steers less than 550 lbs sold unevenly, 550-650 lbs sold 10.00 higher and steers over 650 lbs sold sharply higher. Heifers under 450 lbs sold weak, 450-750 sold mostly 10.00 higher, 750-850 lbs sold 6.00 to 7.00 lower, and over 850 lbs sold 5.00 higher. Demand ranged from moderate to good throughout the markets with notably good demand for 600 lb steers. Negotiated cash dressed delivered purchases for the week in Nebraska were 1.00 lower than the week prior, ranging from 292.00 to 293.00.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
