Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steers under 500 lbs sold steady. Most weight of steers from 500 to 800 lbs sold 2.00 to 3.00 lower except 6 weights sold 15.00 lower. Heifers sold steady to 2.00 lower instances 4.00 lower on 5 weights. Demand was moderate to good at the auctions with some procurement from internet buyers. Most cattle auctions followed the downward trend of the CME cattle boards with sharp losses on various weights especially one heading straight to the feedlot. Feedlots slipped backwards too on market ready cash cattle. Live sales sold 2.00 to 3.00 lower at 187.00 and dressed sales sold 4.00 to 6.00 lower from 296.00 to 297.00. Some nice moisture across many areas of the state over the weekend. Along with a foot of wind that continues to blow in many areas.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
