Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week flyweight steers sold 5.00 lower, 500 to 800 lbs sold 4.00 to 8.00 higher and over 800 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher. Heifers less than 900 lbs sold 4.00 to 7.00 higher. Demand was good for calves and feeder cattle. Very good demand for bred heifers and cows as buyers held their hands high and took ownership of the lots coming through the ring. Most cattlemen are short on mother cows and are trying to get back to par on numbers their pastures can carry for a grazing season. Hay carry over will be rather large for the first time in a few years. Nebraska feedlots traded show-list higher with live sales trading from 182.00 to 184.00 and dressed sales from 290.00 to mostly 292.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
