Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
Compared to last week flyweight steers sold sharply higher, 500 to 700 lbs sold 5.00 to 9.00 higher, over 700 lbs sold steady to 6.00 higher. Heifers sold 5.00 to 8.00 higher, except 900 lbs sold steady. Demand for wheat grazers or summer grass and replacement heifers was very good with good demand for feeder cattle. Loads of cattle headed out of the state to "greener" pastures. Some local cattlemen continue to fill lots with cattle suited for summer grass and for a finishing ration. Pen conditions are muddy in a big area of the state. One would think it would soften the demand for feeders but that hasn't been the case so far. NASS released the annual cattle inventory last Wednesday stating the lowest number of cattle since 1961. Nebraska feedlots traded show list a tick higher on the week. Dressed sales sold 3.00 higher at 280.00 and live sales sold 1.00 higher from 176.00 to 178.00. Still not high enough for the pounds of loss from each market ready animal from the winter storms two to three weeks ago.
