Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to two weeks ago, steers under 550 lbs sold 10.00 to 15.00 higher, 550 to 750 lbs sold 3.00 to 8.00 higher and over 750 lbs sold 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Heifers sold sharply higher with most lots under 650 lbs trading 20.00 higher on the week. 700 lbs heifers sold 7.00 higher. Over 750 lbs sold 3.00 to 5.00 lower. Some lots of cattle displayed a little extra flesh as the winter temperatures have been favorable to background livestock. Demand was very good throughout the week and its usually is the first couple of weeks after the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Nebraska feedlots saw an upward trend on market ready steers and heifers. Live and dressed sales sold 1.00 to 2.00 higher at 173.00 to 175.00 live and from 274.00 to 275.00 dressed.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
