Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steer calves under 700 lbs sold 7.00 to 12.00 lower, 700 to 900 lbs sold unevenly steady and over 900 lbs sold 7.00 lower on thin test. Heifer calves under 600 lbs sold 6.00 lower, over 600 lbs sold unevenly steady. Demand was light to very good. Early week sales sold sharply lower from the negativity from the previous week cattle on feed report and the sharply lower CME livestock complex. By the end of the week the market settled down and buyers stepped up and procured bawling calves close to the previous weeks market. Also, cooler temperatures and the wise words from the ole farmer's almanac said it was a good time to wean livestock. Buyers continue to look for cattle with fall vaccinations. Buyers would procure calves with springtime shots but at a sharply lower price than calves with fall shots. Rain showers mid-week and then December like temps along with some light snow came across the state late in the week. Some farmers had to shut harvest down due to muddy field conditions. Nebraska feedlots sold dressed cattle 4.00 lower at 290.00 and live sales sold uneven from 183.00 to 186.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
