Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steers under 800 lbs sold mostly 2.00 lower, 8oo weights sold steady and over 900 lbs sold 9.00 lower. Heifers under 500 lbs sold steady, 500 to 700 lbs sold 9.00 to 10.00 lower and over 700 lbs sold steady to 5.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good. Getting into the fall run and most buyers are looking for calves with at least two rounds of vaccinations. Some of these calves are trucked several hundred miles and co-mingled so a good vaccination program that includes a strong respiratory protocol is a bonus. Live feedlot sales sold 1.00 lower on the week at 183.00 and dressed sales sold steady to 2.00 lower from 288.00 to 290.00. Fall harvest is in full swing across the state as farmers are very busy getting crops to their bins, local elevator or the feedlot.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
