Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last week steers under 500 lbs sold sharply higher, 500 to 800 lbs sold 6.00 to 10.00 higher and over 800 lbs sold steady. Fly-weight heifers trending sharply higher like there brothers. Weights from 500 to 800 lbs sold 4.00 to 7.00 higher. Flat 800 lbs heifer traded 8.00 higher with 900 lbs offerings steady. Cow/calf and heifer pairs sold with a higher undertone throughout the week. Demand was good to very good for all offering on the market. Really nice rain showers most of the week helped take some doom and gloom off the ag sector. All contacts were very happy that it rained! The rains give hope of green grass and added topsoil and some subsoil moisture for the growth of annual and perennial forages. Also, some stock dams are getting filled. Slaughter steers and heifers sold steady to 2.00 lower on the week from 175.00 to 177.00 and dressed sales sold 1.00 lower at 280.00.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
