Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steers under 700 lbs sold 7.00 to 10.00 higher, 700 weight steers sold 5.00 lower and over 800 lbs sold 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Heifers under 600 lbs sold 4.00 to 8.00 higher, 600 to 800 lbs sold unevenly steady and over 800 lbs sold 1.00 higher. Demand was good at area auctions with active internet buying. Another very dry week with only spotty rain showers reported across the state. Last Thursday the US Drought monitor placed most of the state in the extreme category. Most of this area has a large supply of summer range that might not get used as fires and dryness will limit summer grazing. Some producers could be between a rock and hard spot as limited hay supplies prevail and might not get to turn out till late June that is if rain comes in May. Feedlot trade in Nebraska sold live sales 2.00 to 7.00 lower than last week at 178.00 and dressed sales sold 1.00 to 4.00 lower from 283.00 to 286.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
