Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steers under 500 lbs sold 3.00 higher, 500 to 800 lbs sold 15.00 higher, 800 to 900 lbs sold 10.00 higher and over 900 lbs sold 3.00 higher. Most lots of heifers under 800 lbs sold 10.00 to 15.00 higher. Over 800 lbs sold 3.00 to 6.00 higher. Demand was good to very good for all offerings throughout the week. Rather large supple of calves and yearlings for this time of year. Some cattlemen might be selling grass cattle to save available grazing for their cow herds as the bulk of the state is very dry. Range fires were the normal last week, with low humidity and high winds and a spark from somewhere burned thousands of acres of grass and range land mostly in the central areas of the state. Nebraska feedlots had a spark too but, in a very good way. Live sales jumped upward as packers continue to line up numbers and seek cattle that will grade Choice. Live sales sold 9.00 to 10.00 higher from 182.00 to 186.00 and dressed sales sold 10.00 to 15.00 higher at 290.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
