Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last weeks steers under 700 lbs sold steady, 700-800 sold 7.00 higher and over 800 lbs sold steady to 2.00 higher. Heifers under 700 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher, 700-900 lbs sold 4.00 to 6.00 higher and over 900 lbs sold steady on a thin test. Demand was good throughout the week for calves, feeder, cow/calf pairs and bred cows. US drought monitor still has most of the state at least abnormally dry and drier in many areas. Northwest and some in the Centrals areas received some snow over the weekend and other areas had a little rain with some large hail and dry in other parts. Green grass is trying to peak through the ground. Just need some rain and warm temps and it would grow overnight. Sharply higher feedlot trade on Thursday with dressed sales 5.00 to 7.00 higher from 270.00 to 272.00 and live sales sold 4.00 to 7.00 higher from 168.00 to 172.00. This is the first time since end of 2014 to early 2015 where feedlots were paid this amount for negotiated cash cattle.
