Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week fly weight steers sold sharply higher, 500 lbs sold 2.00 higher, over 600 lbs sold mostly steady with 800 lbs trading 2.00 lower. Heifers under 500 lbs sold 2.00 higher, over 500 to 8.00 lbs sold 3.00 to 5.00 lower, over 800 lbs sold 2.00 to 5.00 lower. Demand was good for offerings that will go to summer grass with moderate demand for feedlot placements. With snow on the ground, it has sparked the interests from producers that run yearlings on summer grass and the bred heifer and cow market have held there own the last few sales. Feedlot pens are sloppy, muddy, and anywhere in between so managers have pulled back there buy bids and demand feeders has soften some. Plus, there are a lot of cattle moving across the state this month. These large sales are putting some downward pressure on the feeder cattle. Feedlot trade for the week sold steady to 1.00 lower from 156.00 to 157.00 and dressed sales sold steady to 2.00 lower from 250.00 to 252.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
