Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, steer calves under 600 lbs sold 5.00 to 9.00 higher, over 600 lbs sold 3.00 to 4.00 lower. Heifers under 700 lbs sold 4.00 to 6.00 lower and over 700 lbs sold steady. Demand was moderate to good for calves and feeder cattle. Rather large supply of feeder cattle on the market the last full week of 2022 due to blizzard conditions in the North Central area of Nebraska the previous two weeks. Many ranchers are short on winter feed and decided they needed to sell their weaned calves to save feed for the bred cows at the ranch. Most lots of cattle sold with condition in the buyers favor due to the harsh weather the last couple of weeks. Large run of bred heifers and cows sold at the Burwell Livestock Holiday Cow Classic with several loads going to out of state buyers. Large crowd on hand with several bidders using DV Auction and Cattle USA to procure loads from their home office.
