Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steers under 700 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher, over 700 lbs sold steady to 5.00 lower. Heifers under 600 lbs sold steady to 4.00 higher, over 600 lbs sold 2.00 to 6.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good with large crowd of buyers on hand and the internet was also active. Sharply lower CME cattle boards in early week trading took a little of the momentum off the calf and especially the feeder cattle market at early week sales. Some of the cattle at various auctions displayed extra fill due to weather changes taking a little money off those offerings. Quite a few lots across the state also showed a little extra flesh due to the great feeding weather, top genetics the weaned calves really gained and performed well this fall. Nebraska feedlots slaughter steers and heifers sold live sales 1.00 lower at 156.00 and dressed sales sold 1.00 to 2.00 lower at 247.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
