Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steer calves under 600 lbs sold 3.00 to 7.00 lower, 600 to 800 lbs sold 3.00 to 6.00 higher and over 800 lbs sold 2.00 lower. Heifer calves under 600 lbs sold steady, 600 to 800 lbs sold 5.00 to 6.00 lower and over 800 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good throughout the week. Quite a few of the farmer/feeder buyers are busy with fall work and have not been active buyers at the sales. Plus, this time of year out of state buyers are in Nebraska procuring loads of light weight calves to head to wheat pastures. With drought conditions in the Southern Plains green wheat pastures are very limited. Nebraska feedlots live and dress sales sold 2.00 higher from 146.00 to 148.00 and 230.00 respectively.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
