Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week fly-weight steer calves sold steady to 3.00 lower, 400 to 600 lbs sold 4.00 to 8.00 lower, 600 to 700 lbs sold 2.00 higher, 700 to 900 lbs sold 8.00 higher, 900 lbs sold steady and over 950 lbs sold 3.00 lower. Fly-weight heifers sold 6.00 lower, 400 to 600 calves sold 9.00 to 10.00 lower, 600 to 700 lbs sold steady, 700 to 800 lbs sold 5.00 higher with all other weights over 800 lbs trading steady to 6.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good throughout the week. Bawling spring calves continue to hit the market out of SW part of the state. Pastures are very dry with very short brown grass throughout many sections. Cattle coming out of this area is has been light fleshed on calves and yearlings. Quite a few of the yearlings on the market this week came out of backgrounding lots with some off grass. Nebraska feedlots gained an upward push on their negotiated sales with live trades gaining 2.00 at mostly 140.00 and dressed sales sold steady to 7.00 higher from 225.00 to 232.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
