Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
Compared to last week on comparable offerings of yearling steers over 800 lbs sold 1.00 to 2.00 higher and yearling heifers over 800 lbs sold steady to 8.00 higher. No recent test on weaned fall calves but a sharply higher undertone was noted. All auctions were snappy this week, buyers bid like there wasn't going to be anymore cattle to procure. With the out-front months on the feeder cattle board in the low 180's and corn slipping into the mid-6.00 range buyers are thinking big bucks coming their way. Game show "Press Your Luck" comes to mind as cattlemen are playing and hoping no "whammies" wipe out their profits. Spotty, much needed rain showers across different areas of the state. Along with the new normal of hail and strong winds. Several hay producers are on second cutting of alfalfa with the grass hay guys getting started on native prairie grass. Tonnage remains a little off from last year.
