Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week steers under 550 lbs sold 4.00 to 7.00 higher, 550 to 600 weights sold steady and over 600 lbs sold steady to 4.00 lower. Heifers under 550 lbs sold 2.00 higher, 550 to 850 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower and over 850 lbs sold 6.00 to 9.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good for feeder cattle with good demand for pairs and moderate demand for bred cattle. This week's feeder cattle receipts are roughly twice as high as a year ago because several strings of steers and heifers that were to be turned out on summer grass came to town due to the drought. Also, some cattlemen sold off a few cow/calf pairs and a few bred cows. Negotiated cash feedlot traded sold mostly steady on the week with live sales at 144.00 to 146.00 and dressed sales at 232.00. Farmers have been busy with spring planting through Friday. Much need moisture across several areas of the state at week's close has been welcomed by many. Still a long ways until the state is out of the drought but at least the summer grass will start to green up in many areas.
