Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Steers under 600 lbs sold 5.00 to 9.00 higher; over 600 lbs sold steady to 2.00 lower. Heifers under 550 lbs sold 5.00 to 7.00 higher; over 550 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower. Demand ranged from moderate to very good. Demand best for those calves suitable for grazing or backgrounding as weakness in the CME Cattle Complex limited the upside on the heavier weight cattle. Cost of gains are still still a concern with corn around the 6.00 mark at country elevators in many areas of the state. On Wednesday a light test of live and dressed trades of negotiated cash fed cattle sold from 135.00-137.00, mostly 1.00-3.00 lower at 137.00, and dressed purchases traded 2.00 lower at 218.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
