Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week steers under 600 lbs sold steady to 2.00 lower, over 600 lbs sold 8.00 to 10.00 lower. Heifers under 500 lbs sold 2.00 to 3.00 lower, over 500 lbs sold 3.00 to 7.00 lower. Demand was moderate on feedlot placements and fall bred cows with good demand for grass type cattle and cow/calf pairs. Some parts of the state remain very dry and some ranchers sold their summer and fall bred cows this week. With other cleaning up some pairs of various ages. Majority of these cattle would normally stay at home, but some areas remain dry and cattlemen are trying to conserve pastures. Spotty rain showers over the week across the state. Nebraska feedlot traded some of their show list a tick higher than last week’s market. Live sales sold 2.00 higher at 120.00 an dressed sales sold 1.00 to 3.00 higher at 191.00. Most auctions have started their summer sale routine of every other week or once a month sales.
