Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steers under 600 lbs sold steady to 6.00 higher. Over 600 lbs sold 4.00 to 6.00 lower. Heifers under 500 lbs sold sharply higher, 500 lbs offering sold 2.00 higher. Over 600 lbs sold mostly 3.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good with buyers actively buying at weeks close as the CME cattle futures traded sharply higher on Friday and corn sold sharply lower on the day. For the week CME Feb cattle was up 3.95 and closed at 116.72 and Mar feeders was up 8.32 and closed the week at 137.25. Grass cattle buyers were readily procuring cattle for summer turnout as were cattlemen at area ranches at the bred cow and heifer sales reported this week. Price for bred females were firm this week as some top-quality genetics were sold across the state. Nebraska feedlots sold bulk of their show list as live sales from 109.00-110.00 and some dressed sales at 173.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
