Compared to last week steer over 600 lbs sold steady to 2.00 higher. Bulk of the heifers sold 2.00 higher with 700 to 800 lbs 5.00 to 8.00 higher. Demand was good for the short supply of calves and feeder cattle on hand the last week of the year. Demand was also good for the bred cow classic sale in Burwell on December 30th. Several buyers on the seats with active internet buying at the auctions. Nice wet snow across most of the state on Tuesday with a wide range of total inches. Nebraska feedlot sales sold steady to 2.00 higher from 110.00 to 112.00 and dressed sales sold from175.00 to 176.00, 3.00 to 4.00 higher than last test.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
