Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Two sales were held this past week due to summer schedules. Feeder cattle were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed on both steers and heifers. Quality this week was mostly average. Most cattle were coming right off grass and were in light flesh. A few sets of fall born calves which were out on grass were seen this week. These offerings were met with mostly moderate to good demand, while true yearling cattle were met with good to very good demand. Market activity was mostly active this week as a large crowd was on hand for both of this weeks lightly tested sales. Weigh up cows sold on mostly good to very good demand for light offerings. Slaughter cows sold mostly 5.00-8.00 higher on all classes in a narrow comparison. Slaughter bulls sold steady to firm. Weigh up conditions were mixed. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed saw increased demand from feeding buyers this week. This helped push very limited offerings higher.
