Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to last week: steers 400 to 499 lbs 7.00 to 10.00 lower, 500 to 549 lbs mostly steady, 550 to 599 lbs 5.00 to 8.00 lower. Heifers 450 to 499 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 lower, 550 to 599 lbs 8.00 to 10.00 lower. Good to very good demand for calves today. Mostly packages in this offering with just a handful of loads, all coming off the cow. Quality varied quite a bit, from plain to attractive. Calves were in light to moderate flesh with some fill at times. Quite a few colored cattle in the mix today and these are discounted at times. A moderate to active market with a few less buyers in the seats today. Slightly less determination to own cattle than we saw at last week's auction, but still plenty of buyers and farmers interested in filling pens. Temps are still above normal for this time of year but cold and snow are forecasted as possible for next week. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, November 21.
