Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 400 to 449 lbs 15.00 to 20.00 higher, 450 to 599 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher, 600 to 649 lbs mostly steady with instances up to 6.00 lower. Heifers 400 to 549 lbs 7.00 to 12.00 higher, 550 to 599 lbs mostly steady. Very good demand for this large offering of attractive quality calves. Many load lots and packages to choose from, all coming off the cow in light to moderate flesh. Most of the calves had two good rounds of shots. Quite a few colored calves offered and many times met with equal demand and price to blacks. An active market with a full house of buyers, farmer feeders and bull breeders all eager to own cattle.
