Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steer calves 400 to 499 lbs 7.00 to 10.00 higher, 500 to 549 lbs and 600 to 649 lbs mostly steady, 550 to 599 lbs 4.00 to 7.00 higher. Heifer calves 400 to 449 lbs and 500 to 549 lbs 6.00 to 10.00 higher, 450 to 499 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for this large calf offering. A handful of loads and many, many packages offered, all off the cow. Prices varied again this week depending on hide color and preconditioning with calves with no shots or just a 7 way shot seeing the steepest discounts. Many attractive quality calves to choose from, flesh condition mostly light. An active market despite a rough day on live and feeder cattle futures with bull breeders, buyers, and farmer feeders in the seats. Mild weather so far this week helping to dry out yards and keep harvest moving along, some areas saw heavy rain at the end of last week. Two feeder cattle sales next week: Tuesday, October 24 featuring Red Angus calves and regular feeder cattle sale Thursday, October 26.
