Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: yearlings not well compared. Best test on steer calves 450 to 499 lbs mostly steady, 500 to 549 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher. Best test on heifers 400 to 499 lbs unevenly steady. Moderate to good demand for calves this week with load lots seeing the best demand. A wide range of prices with hide color and shot records affecting what buyers were willing to give for these unweaned calves. A moderate to active market with the more buyers in the seats this week and a few farmer feeders. Not exactly ideal weather conditions today to take on calves with widespread rain in the southern part of the state and south into Nebraska along with high winds everywhere. Most guys are wanting to wait out this weather and also get farther along in harvest before they start calves. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, October 19.
