Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

No sale last week, compared to two weeks ago: most weight classes not well compared, best test on steers 650 to 700 lbs and heifers 550 to 600 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Good to very good demand for all weight classes in today's very large offering. Many load lots offered today, with quite a few opportunities to buy multiple loads of same weight cattle from the same outfit, plus lots of part loads and packages to fill trucks. Flesh varied today, from light to some heavy flesh at times. Much of the offering today was heavier feeding type cattle. Quality was mostly attractive throughout the day. An active market with a good crowd of order buyers and farmer feeders in the seats today. Weather has been much warmer than normal for February the last week and some lots are thawing out and getting sloppy. Mostly bred cattle expected for next week's sale, next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, February 24.
