Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: roughly half as many feeder cattle as last week with many weight classes not well tested today for comparison. Best test on steers 600 to 650 lbs mostly 4.00 to 5.00 lower. Best test on heifers 550 to 600 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 lower, 601 to 700 lbs mostly steady. Moderate to good demand for today's offering featuring a handful of loads and many packages. Quality varied, from plain to attractive, overall quality less attractive than last week. Flesh similar, from light to some moderate plus. A moderate to active market for today's offering with mostly order buyers and a few farmer feeders interested in calves today. A full house of producers for the bull sale and bred sale after the feeder cattle sale. No sale next week, next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, February 10.
