Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
No sale last week due to Thanksgiving, compared to two weeks ago: steer calves 400 to 650 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher except 450 to 500 lbs not well compared, instances up to 10.00 higher on 500 to 550 lbs. Heifer calves 450 to 550 lbs steady to 2.00 higher, 551 to 600 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Very good demand for a string of 1150 light fleshed, spayed yearling heifers included in today's offering. Calves met with good to very good demand. Many load lots included in today's offering, and many packages as well, most calves were attractive in quality. The majority of the calves still coming off the cow, one consignment of weaned calves included in today's offering, weaned 60 days. Flesh mostly light to moderate. Calves were fully preconditioned, or had a full round of shots in the fall. An active market seen for this offering with buyers, farmer feeders, and a few bull breeders in the seats today. The weather continues to be very mild and dry for this time of year. The calves look especially bloomy and clean right now. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, December 10.
