Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steer calves 400 to 450 lbs 6.00 to 8.00 higher, 451 to 700 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 450 to 600 lbs mostly steady. Moderate to good demand for today's large calf offering. Similar to recent weeks, load lots from reputation ranches see the best demand. Quality similar to last week with most of the offering being average to attractive in quality. Flesh mostly light to moderate. All calves off the cow again today and most had full preconditioning, or at least one full round of fall shots. A moderate to active market seen for this offering with order buyers, farmer feeders, and a couple bull breeders attending the sale today. Temps remain above normal for this time of year. No feeder cattle sale next week due to Thanksgiving, next feeder cattle sale will be Thursday, December 3.
