Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers under 650 lbs sold mostly steady except for 350-450 lbs 5.00-10.00 higher and steers over 650 lbs 3.00-5.00 lower. Heifers sold steady to 5.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good, best for cattle under 625 lbs. Supply was moderate with nice weather to move cattle. There were several quality consignments of reputation cattle offered and the quality was good. However, as a whole not quite the quality and attractive condition that was seen last week to push some of the extreme top prices on the grazing cattle. After a couple of weeks of heavy receipts and a sluggish fed cattle market, the heavier yearlings have been under some pressure. Slaughter cows sold steady to 3.00 lower.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
