Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to a light test from three weeks ago, steers and heifers under 600 sold 4.00-10.00 higher and heavier weights steady to 6.00 higher. The quality and condition of the cattle was attractive with several reputation consignments on hand. Trade was active and demand was good to very good. Supply was heavy. A large reputation consignment of 500 plus cattle was sold on video as well. No doubt buyers were eager to buy cattle, especially those suitable to graze following the weather break. Slaughter cows sold uneven when compared to three weeks ago from 2.00-3.00 higher on the fleshier breaking cows to 2.00-3.00 lower for the lean and boning cows.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
