Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold unevenly steady from 10.00 lower to 10.00 higher. Strength on steer and heifer calves from 500-600 lbs. was noted by several reporters. Still not on a full sale schedule as some barns took off early week following the holiday rather than prior too. Following several special sales the week prior to the Forth of July the only special this week was at Callaway Livestock Center, where many big drafts of reputation consignments sold at very impressive price levels. Overall, the supply of feeders was light to moderate with good demand. As the summer menu changes focus from steaks to burgers the cattle industry has found a fair bit of pressure. Cattle futures have had ten consecutive days of lower trading and boxed beef values have struggled after the choice touched the 400.00 mark for one day. Fed cattle prices have also declined. Much of this is, however, seasonal and prices remain historically high despite the recent losses. Seventy-Seven percent of the states pastures are rated good to excellent which is incredible for mid-July. Hay piles have filled back up as producers got the weather break needed to finally get hay baled. A few stick-out sales this week included several strings from the special sale at Callaway Livestock Center where 69 head of 472 lb. steers sold for 584.00, 45 head of 516 lb. steers brought 543.00, 88 head of 617 lb. steers for 501.00, 82 head of 650 lb. steers for 462.50 and 42 head of 716 lb. steers sold for 436.25. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 45 head of 556 lb. steers for 520.00, 31 head of 838 lb. steers for 377.00, 32 head of 902 lb. steers for 362.00, and 61 head of 966 lb. steers for 348.00. Ozarks Regional Stockyards sold 76 head of 754 lb. steers for 390.50. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 57 head of 870 lb. steers for 364.00. Callaway Livestock Center sold 24 head of 524 lb. heifers for 542.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 149 head of 702 lb. heifers for 379.25. Boxed beef cut-out values were mixed for the week as of Friday's close. Choice closed at 382.68, down 4.39 and Select closed at 368.33, up 0.90 compared to last week. The choice/select spread is at 14.35 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday was reported just under 67K head. Live sales reported mostly at 248.00, 7.00 lower and dressed sales 393.00, 10.00 lower than last week. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3898 head with a weighted average weight of 549.19 lbs. and a price value of 487.23, 10.04 higher than last week. The steer/heifer is 43.20 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
