Market comments — USDA reporter

Not enough sales last week for a good trend but looking back to two weeks ago, calves sold mostly 5.00-15.00 lower, heavier weights over 750 lbs. sold steady to 5.00 lower. Heat and humidity is starting to set in as summer draws closer making it a bit more stressful on calves without weaning or vaccination programs. Those calves yet to shed off, with fescue hair, considered much less desirable this time of year by buyers as well. Although there were several scattered showers and some areas had storms with heavy rain and flash flooding, there were also a few windows in other areas and several farmers were making hay especially early week. Wednesday evening USDA announced New World Screw Worm was found on a farm in Texas that was followed up with a second case over the weekend. Markets seemed to have this figured in and feeder futures spiked higher on Thursday, as fears of even more supply shortages lie ahead. A few stick-out sales this week included 32 head of 508 lb. steers at Callaway Livestock Center that sold for 557.50, 37 head of 621 lb. steers that sold for 486.00, 47 head of 660 lb. steers that brought 451.00 and two loads of 919 lb. steers that sold for 352.50. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 29 head of 555 lb. steers for 505.50. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold a load of 705 lb. steers for 427.50. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 36 head of 788 lb. steers for 389.00. Unionville Livestock Market sold a load of 873 lb. steers for 364.25. Callaway Livestock Center sold 28 head of 525 lb. heifers for 485.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold two loads of 729 lb. heifers for 374.00. Boxed beef cutout values closed mixed for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 392.70, up 1.23 and Select closed at 382.69, down 0.49 compared to last week. The choice/select spread is at 8.29 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday afternoons report totaled just shy of 74K head. Live sales were mostly at 255.00-256.00 with some late week sales at 258.00. Dressed sales were mostly at 405.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 9450 head with a weighted average weight of 526.56 lbs. and a price value of 464.07, 5.34 higher than last week. The steer/heifer is 45.33 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
