Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 10.00 higher. Pressure from last week was forgotten as fed cattle led the cattle markets higher this week, after a sharp spike in negotiated fed trade early in the week. Rain and some severe weather early in the week kept some cattle from making it to town this week and field work to a minimum. Still a lot of grain to be planted or possibly replanted now and several producers are ready to get to haying as soon as a window and fields allow. The supply of feeders was moderate, and demand was good. A few stick-out sales this week included: 44 head of 471 lb. steers at New Cambria Livestock Auction that sold for 579.00. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 22 head of 514 lb. steers for 560.00. South Central Regional Stockyards sold 32 head of 555 lbs. steers for 515.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 22 head of 616 lb. steers for 467.50 and 63 head of 861 lb. steers for 369.00. Four States Stockyards sold 25 head of 654 lb. steers for 428.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 31 head of 729 lb. steers for 417.00 F & T Livestock Market sold 52 head of 776 lb. steers for 390.00 and 56 head of 938 lb. steers for 344.00. Springfield Livestock Marketing Center sold 65 head of 809 lb. steers for 386.00. South Central Regional Stockyards sold 25 head of 525 lb. heifers at 470.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 246 head of 714 lb. heifers for feed at 395.50. Boxed beef cutout values closed higher for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 389.11, up 2.11 and select closed at 387.05, up 0.98 compared to last week. The choice/select spread is at 2.06 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday afternoons report totaled just over 89K. Prices were sharply higher for the week with live sales 9.00-11.00 higher at 255.00-257.00 and dressed sales 14.00 higher at 400.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 6597 head with a weighted average weight of 532.98 lbs. and a price value of 496.31, 3.52 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 51.25.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
