Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher. There were spots this week of both lower and higher markets, but stronger prices persisted. Both the Missouri stocker formula and the CME cash feeder cattle index recorded new record high values this week. The supply was moderate with the majority being calves under 600 lbs. and being offered with varied health and flesh conditions, which helps to explain the wide ranges of trends and prices. Although there have been some cold snaps temperatures have been above average for all of March and April to date. This has several producers turned to grass now. Planters were rolling in some areas of the state while others were paused due to fields being too wet. The Monthly Cattle on Feed Report was released on Friday, and numbers were very close to pre-report estimates and will likely be forgotten before the markets open Monday. Overall, all the story of short supplies still hasn't changed. On feed numbers were published at 99.5 percent of a year ago, Placements at 92.7 percent and Marketings at 94.5 percent. Slaughter cattle markets remain very strong with prices once again near or at record levels, even with a temporary setback as one of the major cow plants had a breakdown this week. It is expected to be back in operation sometime this week, in the meantime other plants have been able to pick up the slack as no plants have been running anywhere near full capacity. A few stick-out sales this week included: 20 head of 485 lb. steers at Ozark Regional Stockyards that sold for 575.00 along with 20 head of 753 lb. steers for 400.00. Callaway Livestock Center sold 78 head of 520 lb. fancy, thin fleshed, extremely uniform steers for 590.00; a new nationwide record for light five weights of any sizeable draft. Mid-Missouri Stockyards sold 31 head of 551 lb. steers for 525.00 and 35 head of 657 lb. steers for 466.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 39 head of 716 lb. steers for 436.00 and two loads of 906 lb. steers for 363.75. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold a load of 855 lb. steers for 371.00 and 77 head of 527 lb. heifers for 515.00. Tina Livestock Market sold a load of 718 lb. heifers for 386.00. Boxed beef cutout values closed mixed for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 81.06, up 0.16 and select closed at 376.60, down 1.88 compared to last week. The choice/select spread is at 4.46 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday afternoons report totaled just over 87K. Prices were near steady with the previous week. Live prices were reported 248-249.00 and dressed sales at 388.00-389.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 7631 head with a weighted average weight of 526.42 lbs. and a price value of 506.42, 3.99 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 51.31.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
