Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher. The supply of cattle is quickly shifting with many more fall calves in the offering. Some being offered with health and weaning programs while others coming straight off their mommas and typically carrying more flesh. With turn out time just around the corner those with no extra management are not finding quite the same demand as there just isn't enough time to straighten them out before grass. Weather swings mean those calves come with a bit risk, perhaps not as much as the same type of calf in the fall, but tight margins mean any death loss cuts in to the slim profit margins drastically. Many pastures have seen fertilizer buggies over the last week and several acres of corn and even some beans are in the ground now. Much of the upcoming week is expected to be wet, which is welcome, although some forecasts are talking heavy down pours with amounts enough to possibility cause some temporary flooding. Much like the mercury lately seems moisture, wind and all-weather related things are at one extreme or the other. A few stick out sales this week included 40 head of 492 lb. steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards that sold for 577.50, another full load of 836 lb. steers brought 365.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 40 head of 502 lb. steers for 540.00. Springfield Livestock Marketing Center sold 33 head of 557 lb. steers for 500.00. Unionville Livestock Market sold 42 head of 635 lb. steers for 457.00 and a full load of 889 lb. steers for 347.50. Tina Livestock Market sold 63 head of 655 lb. steers at 445.00 and 27 head of 706 lb. steers for 420.00. Eastern Missouri Commission Company sold 51 head of 767 lb. steers for 382.75. Tina Livestock Market sold 20 head of 515 lb. heifers at 479.00. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold 2 loads of 715 lb. heifers going to feed for 375.25. Kingsville Livestock Market sold two loads of replacement heifers just passing the 700 lb. mark at 395.00 and 402.00. Boxed beef cutout values closed lower for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 392.97, down 7.14 and select closed at 389.87, down 3.07 compared to last week. The choice/select spread at 3.10 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday afternoons report was just over 40k head. Live prices were reported at 235.00 and dressed sales at 370.00-372.00. It is likely more sales occurred after the report cutoff time but that won't be known until later on Monday. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 6026 head with a weighted average weight of 528.68 lbs. and a price value of 488.72, 0.24 lower than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 50.01.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
