Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold unevenly steady with most of the sales falling in the range of 5.00 lower to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate, although many barns are starting to see runs lighten up and the type of cattle coming to town is changing along with the seasons. A lot of uncertainty is once again hanging over the cattle industry resulting in price volatility. Several global factors, although not directly related, also having effects and putting pressure on the markets. Cattle futures saw double digit losses for the week. Fed cattle trade followed and sold sharply lower as well. Boxed beef values jumped as concerns over possible disruptions to already tight supplies have many wanting to keep coolers full to assure meat counters remained stocked as temperatures warm and seasonal demand increases. Closer to home some much need rains fell over the weekend and are forecasted to continue this coming week. Hints of spring are in the air, and although there can still be plenty of rough weather, it doesn't feel like it will be long till green grass. A few stick out sales this week of drafts over 20 head included: 24 head of 458 lb. steers at Callaway Livestock Center that sold for 585.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards so 35 head of 527 lb. steers for 555.00, 27 head of 701 lb. steers for 428.00 and a full load of 865 lb. steers for 364.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 26 head of 552 lb. steers for 520.00 and 39 head of 811 lb. steers for 379.50. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 20 head of 612 lb. steers for 485.00. Unionville Livestock Market sold a load of 914 lb. steers for 359.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 24 head of 548 lb. heifers 496.00. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold 80 head of 728 lb. heifers for 378.00. Boxed beef cutout values closed sharply higher for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 379.77, up 13.07 and select closed at 374.25, up 13.51 compared to last week. The choice/select spread at 5.52 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday afternoons report was just under 46k head. There was likely once again volume that occurred later Friday after the report cut off time. The sales that were reported were lower, live prices were reported 239.00-244.00 and dressed sales from 375.00-383.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 4944 head with a weighted average weight of 549.62 lbs. and a price value of 484.28, 4.38 lower than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 52.27.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
