Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher, still some spots of sharply higher money on the right kind and quality, especially on mid to lighter weights suitable for grazing. Though the market seemed to be a bit calmer this week. Overall quality was perhaps not quite as impressive as what has been in previous weeks as many of the best feeders have already been marketed. Not to say there still wasn't some impressive drafts and following the recent cold and snow flesh conditions generally favored the buyers a bit more. The supply was heavy as those who were unable to get out because of weather were able to market cattle this week. Record high temperatures even resulted in a little mud on top even though most of the state remains in some stage of drought. A few stick out sales this week of drafts over 20 head included: 57 head of 466 lb. steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards that brought 600.00 and 114 head of 865 lb. steers for 366.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 39 head of 522 lb. steers for 550.00 and 67 head of 568 lb. steers for 515.00. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 27 head of 633 lb. steers for 485.00 and a load of 757 lb. steers for 400.00. Callaway Livestock Center sold 23 head of 681 lb. steers for 449.00 and 27 head of 718 lb. steers for 421.00. South Central Regional Stockyards sold 32 head of 807 lb. steers for 382.00. Unionville Livestock Market sold a load of 905 lb. steers for 364.00. Callaway Livestock Center sold 48 head of 508 lb. heifers for 500.00. and Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 24 head of 708 lb. heifers heading to feed for 374.00. Several more of the heavier weight heifers this week had interest as replacements although total numbers of heavier weight heifers were not as larger as last week. Boxed beef cutout values closed lower for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 364.47, down 4.86 and select closed at 363.42, down 1.11 compared to last week. The choice/select spread remaining narrow at 1.05 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday afternoons report was very limited and came in just under 13k head. There was no doubt significant volume that occurred later Friday after the report cut off time. The limited sales that were reported were steady to higher, live prices were reported 238.00-248.00. Dressed sales reported 378.00-382.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 9171 head with a weighted average weight of 548.82 lbs. and a price value of 482.79, 2.76 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 50.31.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
