Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers and heifers under 600 lbs. sold mostly steady with instances of a few dollars on either side of steady, feeders over 600 lbs. sold steady to 5.00 higher. A lighter offering at most barns this week as business begin to slow prior to the holidays. Price levels continue to be at or very near all-time record highs as the year comes to an end. The monthly Cattle on Feed Report was released Friday with no surprises as all three categories were right in line with pre-report expectations. Winter officially arrived over the weekend, following an overall mild Fall everyone is currently setting on good supplies of feed to start off the new year in good shape for when harsher weather arrives as some point. A few stick-out sales this week included 24 head of 421 lb. steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards which sold for 405.00 and 34 head of 506 lb. steers for 350.00. New Cambria Livestock Auction sold 30 head of 609 lb. steers at 326.50. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market had several full loads of high-quality cattle this week, including 81 head of 659 lbs. steers that sold for 316.00, 78 head of 712 lb. steers for 289.75 and 70 head of 763 lb. steers for 275.25. Callaway Livestock Center sold a load of 813 lb. steers for 266.50. Tina Livestock Market sold a load of 861 lb. steers at 257.50 as well as 21 head of 530 lb. heifers for 318.00. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market also had several stick out sales on the heifer side of the market this week with a load of 695 lb. heifers which sold for 277.00, three load of 720-735 lb. heifers which all sold for 266.75, and a load of 759 lb. heifers which brought 260.75. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 315.85, down 0.54 and Select closed at 285.91, up 2.05 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled just shy of 47K head as of the 2:00 report cutoff time. Live sales were reported from 191.00-196.00 and dressed sales from mostly 305.00 with a couple of instances up to 315.00. IA and NE accounted for nearly all the trade reported with only very light numbers reported in KS and nearly nothing in TX. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 5172 head with a weighted average weight of 549.54 lbs. and a price value of 317.66, 0.04 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 36.66 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
