Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder under 700 lbs. sold unevenly steady to 5.00 lower, weights over 700 lbs. sold steady to 2.00 higher. The supply was light to moderate. Summer seems to be setting in and most buyers just don't have much desire for unweaned, bawling calves, with extra flesh or hair. Between transportation and acquiring a new address these types can be risky investment currently and takes a little time to get straighten out and back to gaining pounds. Most folks that graze filled those orders a month or more ago, so outlets just aren't as abundant at the current time. Yearlings however, especially those in load lots, which typically get fewer in number and therefore harder to find in the summer are finding excellent demand. The feeder cattle index, a reflection of actual sales of heavier weight cattle at auctions though the central twelve state region, set an all-time record high this week. For the most part corn and bean planting is complete now and farmers turned attention to haying this week. One didn't have to drive very far in any direction to see hay equipment in the fields this week. A few stick-out sales this week included a part load of 732 lb. steers at Lolli Brothers Livestock Market. Three loads of 793 lb. steers at Tina Livestock Market which sold for 267.10. four loads of 835 lb. steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards brought 259.50. A load of 913 lb. steers at Unionville Livestock Market sold for 257.50. On the heifer side of the market Kingsville Livestock Market sold a part load of 716 lb. heifers at 265.75. Boxed beef cutouts were higher for the week, choice closed on Friday at 319.89, up 3.14 and select closed at 303.81, up 2.67 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled 88K head most trade occurred on Thursday this week. Live sales were reported 186.00-197.00 and dressed sales reported from 305.00-310.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 5393 head with a weighted average weight of 549.19 lbs. and a price value of 310.94, 4.10 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 30.24.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
