Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold unevenly steady. There were spots across the board both a few dollars lower and a few dollars higher without out much rhyme or reason to weights or the day of the week. The supply of feeders was light to moderate, and demand was moderate to good. Given the ups and downs of the futures markets due to news and rumors about avian flu virus, some of which proved true while other parts didn't, prices at the local auctions held together very well for the week. Given that prices have been at or near record levels rumors are more than enough to cause some nervousness and sometimes move markets significantly. Local auctions were about the only bright spot this week as fed cattle, boxed beef, and futures all ended the week much lower. A few notable sales this week included a load of 417 lb. steers with thin flesh at Kingsville Livestock Market which sold for 394.00. A part load of 511 lb. steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards sold for 350.00. A part load of 714 lbs. steers at Green City Livestock Market sold for 284.50. Joplin Regional Stockyards also sold two loads of 801 lb. steers at 259.75. A couple of notable heifer sales included a load of 501 lb. heifers at Callaway Livestock Center which sold for 310.00 and a load of 703 lb. heifers at Lolli Brothers Livestock Market which brought 257.75. Boxed beef cutouts values were sharply lower for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 297.17, down 9.05 and select closed at 294.70, down 8.73 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled about 75K head prices levels were lower this week. Live sales were reported at 183.00-187.00 and Dressed sales at 296.00-297.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 5,404 head with a weighted average weight of 527.24 lbs. and a price value of 317.02, 0.02 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 40.79.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
