Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, grazing weight calves mostly under 700 lbs. sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher with heavier weight yearling types steady to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate with offerings at local barns slowing up slightly. Demand is good to very good as buyers continue to aggressively buy up calves that can be put out on grass. Still a lot of reports of producers selling earlier than normal as prices are just too good to pass up. February was one of the warmest on record and this has a lot of green showing around the state already. Despite a short-lived dose of winter midweek much of the past week was spent in short sleeves. A few farmers are out in the fields cutting in gas for corn if they didn't already get that done last fall. Pastures and hay fields are getting fertilizer applied and everyone seems happy about the early spring. There is some concern that moisture is needed though as near 86 percent of the state is listed as abnormally to moderately dry and without some spring moisture all that hope and optimism for the new growing year will fade quickly. A few of this week's stick out sales included 35 head of 465 lb. steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards which sold for 365.00. Ozarks Regional Stockyards had two big stick out sales this week 270 head of 556 fancy black white faced steers which sold for 329.85 and another 111 head of 717 lb. steers which sold for 271.50. Callaway Livestock Center sold a load of 856 lbs. steers for 248.00. Boxed beef cutouts values were higher this week. Choice closed on Friday at 305.28, up 4.67 and select closed at 295.74, up 9.43 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled 69K head with sales developing late and more likely took place after the report cutoff. Live sales were reported at 183.00-184.50 and Dressed sales at 290.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula doing exactly what it was designed to do and continues to reflect prices climbing higher into new record territory. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 5,120 head with a weighted average weight of 540.06 lbs. and a price value of 311.08, 8.97 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 39.95.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
