Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, a very light test of feeders sold with firm to higher undertones. Auction activity was very limited this week with most auctions being cancelled due to extreme cold and winter weather. The supply light and demand was light to moderate. Buyers would light to get back to buying cattle and filling orders but in many cases transporting cattle this week was impossible even if they could find them to buy. There has been some auctions that have seen near a month now without any market due to holidays and winter weather. Record setting cold make things just downright miserable for most of the week. Weeks like this make the hay piles smaller in a hurry as famers have to provide not only full diets but also provide a place for cattle to lay down and try to retain some body heat. Late in the week there was a few sales that took place and price were quite good reflecting buyers desire to fill orders. Callaway Livestock Center held a special yearling sale on Friday with many load lots of yearlings. A load of 733 lb, steers sold at 247.50 and two loads of 918 lb. steers sold for 223.00. Eastern Missouri Commission Company sold a part load of 811 lb. fancy heifers that were bought as replacements for 232.50. The monthly Cattle on Feed Report was released on Friday and came and went without any fanfare as all numbers feel with in expectations. The livestock sector will now wait till the end of the month for the semi-annual inventory report to see just how much the herd has decreased in the last year. Boxed beef cutouts posted significant gains again this week. On Friday choice closed at 295.50, up 5.91 and select closed at 283.05, up 11.48 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon was dismal with only 12K head reported for the week. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 1042 head with a weighted average weight of 570.83 lbs. and a price value of 266.69, 6.81 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 35.83.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
