Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, a light test of feeders sold uneven from 4.00 lower to 5.00 higher. A shortened holiday week had many of the early week sales closed making for a light supply this week. Most of the northern markets were back on schedule this week however which heavily influenced weighted average prices making markets look much higher on paper as true comparisons of apples to apples were a bit harder to find. That being said Ozarks Regional Stockyards sold 224 head of yearling steers weighing 919 lbs. that brought 231.50, which was 4.00 lower than a near identical consignment from the same owner last week. On the flip side however Eastern Missouri Commission Company sold two loads of heifers 911 and 937 lbs. at 220.00 and 218.75 which was sure enough firm to higher than some similar consignments two weeks ago. Demand is moderate to good but temperatures are starting to swing and discounts for unweaned and or unvaccinated calves is becoming quite severe and likely to only get worse as buyers are calculating in health risk involved with taking ownership of these types. Although prices for all classes of cattle remain very high some of those mid to lighter weight calves without good verifiable health programs are seeing discounts that may exceed 200.00 per head. A few still out sales this week included a part load of 514 lb. steers at Lolli Brothers Livestock which sold at 315.50. Green City Livestock Market held a special sale with several eye catching loads including a load 661 lbs. at 299.00; a load 841 lbs. at 262.50 and a load 908 lbs. at 245.50. Several loads of heifers this week included 3 loads at Lolli Brothers Livestock from 575-600 lbs. which sold from 282.25-285.10. Windsor Livestock Auction had 173 head of heifers averaging 662 lbs. brought 269.75. Boxed beef cutouts gave back a little more ground this week. Choice closed at 312.90, down 1.59 and select closed at 286.05, down 4.24 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon was only 43K head reported. Live sales were reported from 180.00-184.00 and dressed sales were reported at 290.00 Missouri Stocker formula consists of 1463 head with a weighted average weight of 553.54 lbs. and a price value of 288.51, 1.93 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 25.10.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
