Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold mostly steady to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate and demand was good. Auction barns continue to see more cattle than most really expected to still be available by this time. Spring has officially arrived but winter was able to get at least one more jab in with a hard freeze over the weekend. This made several early flowing plants look quite sad. The monthly cattle on feed report was released on Friday. Pre-report estimates were spot on with the actual report. The on feed number was at 96%, placements at 93%, and marketings at 95% of year ago levels. This makes the report mostly neutral but does continue to support the currently overall bullish fundamentals of the market. A few of the top load lots this week included 70 head of 561 lb. steers at Callaway Livestock Center which sold at 260.50. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 72 head of 709 lb. steers at 209.50 and Kingsville Livestock Auction had a load of 64 head of 806 lb. steers for 187.00. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed for the week. Choice closed at 283.55, down 1.36 and select closed at 272.44, up 0.90 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon totaled just over 73K head. Live sales were reported from 163.00-165.00 and dressed sales 263.00-264.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 6016 head with a weighted average weight of 543.50 lbs. and a price value of 232.55, 1.10 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 30.79.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
