Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last test of the market which was two weeks ago in most cases, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher. There were several instances of 10.00 higher, however some of that had to be attributed to factors of overall better quality and the supply of larger lot sizes compared to the last preholiday sales. The supply of feeders was heavy which was expected as the first full week of the New Year is typically the largest volume week of the year as long as weather cooperates. Here in Missouri the weather did cooperate however there was a few buyers at various barns that were not back in the market yet as winter weather did prevent receiving and processing of new cattle in some states especially Nebraska. Demand was good to very good, buyers were eager to fill orders and earn some commission following the holidays after being off a week or two and feedlot managers were ready to put some cattle back into pins. Load lots were plentiful with roughly 125 load and multi load lots sold around the state at auction barns this week. The largest draft was 396 head of 677 lb. heifers which sold for 180.00 at Windsor Livestock Action, which was hosting the qualifying for the World Livestock Auctioneer Championship. Another eye catching sale was 59 head of 919 lb. steers which sold for 177.10 at Callaway Livestock Center. State wide over 2200 head of Medium and Large 1 steers 600-650 lbs. averaged 191.10. The slaughter cow market was sharply higher this week adding some value to the cull cows as momma cows continue to leave farms and has yet to really slow down. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed as choice closed at 281.63, down 0.35 and select closed at 256.95, up 6.02 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon was just under 68k head. Live sales were reported mostly from 157.00-160.00, dressed sales mostly at 252.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 12,766 head with a weighted average weight of 558.93 lbs. and a price value of 198.48, no comparison last week due to the holidays. The steer/heifer spread is 23.69.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
