Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the two weeks ago, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 3.00 higher. Markets didn't see the extreme tops from last week, but most sales last week were special sales and weren't the same kind of cattle in most cases. The supply of feeders was heavy with most sales running well into the night as several reporters noting the offering was made up of many smaller drafts of cattle than what has been seen for several weeks, making buyers work a bit more to put together loads. Demand for cattle is good and colder weather has buyers being slightly less picky about health programs and weaning, but that isn't to say they don't still welcome or aren't willing to pay for that extra work. Time is running out for marketing opportunities this calendar year and early indications from a few barns is that this week will be another big one and if history follows suit numbers will taper off after that until the new calendar year. After the incredible week last week it was a bit harder to see highlights this week perhaps unfairly so as several sales would have been considered just that a couple of weeks ago but once again last week's markets just aren't apples to apples comparisons. That being said one sale that did stick out this week was a 122 head draft of steers tagged as thin which sold on Tuesday at Kingsville Livestock Market for 190.10. A couple of replacement cow sales reinforced an increased in demand for replacements as so many momma cows left production this year. Quality bred heifers are easily passing the 2000.00 mark now. Boxed beef cutouts were lower this week which is typical for this time of year. Choice was down 1.90 and closed at 249.93, select closed an even 10.00 lower at 224.56. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon was just over 64K head but sales were reported higher. Live sales were reported mostly from 155.00-159.00, dressed sales mostly at 249.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 11,889 head with a weighted average weight of 553.16 lbs. and a price value of 191.63, down 4.17 from last week. The steer/heifer spread is 22.12.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
